Introduction career
Pharmacy is one of the main disciplines under Biomedical Science and the pharmaceutical industry. There are many disciplines within the Biomedical sciences.
Pharmacy is related to health sciences. It is the profession responsible for the preparation, dispensing and appropriate use of medication and which provides services to achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes. A Pharmacists job is to prepare, mix, compound or dispense drugs and medicines, ointments, powder, pills, tablets and injections on the prescription of a medical practitioner, dentist or veterinarian. In detail, they are concerned with production of pharmaceutical products, development of the methods or processes of production and quality control. Those in research concern themselves with synthesis of new drugs (what is commonly referred to as molecules), new processes, clinical testing of the effects of such drugs on animals and humans, and obtaining the required License from the drug control authorities. A pharmacist is required to explain the mode and precautions regarding the use of medicines dispensed in a hospital pharmacy, prepare special formulations normally not available in the market, assist the physician in rendering necessary information about various drugs, their contra-indications, incompatibility etc.
There are over 225 programs in Pharmacy conducted by different universities in India. The main courses in Pharmacy are the 2 years Diploma in Pharmacy
(D.Pharm), 4 years Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm), 2 years Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm) and Ph.d programmes.
College Industry Linkage
HPC is a pioneer in the field of Industry linkages and its bold and radical innovations in this regard have no parallel in H.P. The Practice college method of education, a controlled simulation of real-life, adopted at HPC creates circumstances whereby the college is linked with the world of work. Thus the Practice college institutionalizes efforts to build the long needed bridge between the professional world and the educational world. The programme for B.Pharm., has two components, namely of two months’ duration implemented during the summer following the 2nd year and of five and a half months’ duration implemented during either of the semesters of the final year.
The degree students get an opportunity to work through the component in the organizations namely; Concept Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Regional Research Laboratory, Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Ahmedabad; Torrent Research Centre, Ahmedabad; Novartis Enterprises Pvt Ltd., Mumbai; Dr. Reddy’s Lab., Hyderabad; Dr. Morepan Labs, Chandigarh; IPCA Labs, Mumbai; Merind, Mumbai; Strides Arcolabs, Bangalore; Hetero Drugs, Hyderabad; CDRI, ITRC, Lucknow; Institute of Cardio-Vascular Diseases, Chennai; B.V. Pharmacognosy is a specific discipline deals with the rapid developments in the knowledge and utilization of medicinal substances of biological origin (plant, microorganism and animal products) used in human and veterinary purpose. This subject provides information about the principles and procedures used in the identification, authentication, and extraction, isolation of active constituents by chromatography techniques, purification and development of herbal formulations and assay methods for the isolated constituents. Attention is paid to the development of standardization protocols for the herbal formulations.
The department is involved in the protection of endangered medicinal species and the isolation of new drugs and lead compounds from traditional remedies. This department is also maintaining a medicinal garden, which serves as an educational display of medicinal and aromatic plants.

Pharmacology and Toxicology are interdisciplinary areas of biomedical research with applications of physiology, biochemistry, molecular pharmacology, genetics and neuroscience. The primary objective of Pharmacology is to investigate the fundamental aspects of molecular bio-regulatory mechanism of the cell, for understanding how drugs act and in order to develop new drugs for future prophylaxis or therapeutics. Toxicology examines toxicity and adverse effects of new chemical entities on various organs and systems of the body, developed drugs exploration and confirmation of mechanisms of adverse reactions associated with already marketed drugs for mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, teratogenicity and neurobehavioral disorders. The department offers hands on training inscreening of new chemical entities and plant derived molecules for anti-anxiety, anti-psychotic, nootropic, anti-convulsant, anti-oxidant, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic activities; acute, sub-acute and chronic toxicity studies on rodents using plant-derived molecules.

- Department is having sophisticated instrument like UV- Spectroscopy, karlfisher apparatus and planning to purchase HPLC in near future
- Drug control is a pharmaceutical discipline of principal importance. Both theoretical and practical education aims to instruct how to assure the quality, safety and efficacy of drugs, which fulfils one of the basic tasks of pharmaceutical studies. The structure of a chemical drug is the starting point for the determination of a suitable procedure for identification and quantitative analysis. Emphasis is also laid on control analytical methods from the standpoint of detection of accompanying impurities and stability of drugs. Education incorporates requirements for drug quality in connection with the guidelines of Good Laboratory Practice and Good Manufacturing Practice.
- To impart practical skills of inorganic chemistry, and pharmaceutical analysis, 2 well developed laboratories with the necessary equipments are established. A sophisticated central instrument lab is also under development to cater to the needs of analytical assistance to students and faculty. Adequate safety measures are also maintained in the lab to prevent accidents. There is a dearth of information and lot more need to be done in validation, process control, and preparation of standard operating procedures. The department has taken up challenge and is working in the following fields.
